A 31-year-old motorcyclist from Bonnells Bay was airlifted to the John Hunter Hospital after coming off his bike at Cessnock.
Police say the rider lost control after overtaking another vehicle at speed on West Avenue.
He then slid across the road, hit a bridge pylon, and landed in the Black Creek stormwater drain.
The rider sustained serious head injuries but is in a stable condition.
