DOG SQUAD HELPS LOCATE MAN WANTED ON OUTSTANDING WARRANTS

A man on outstanding warrants has led police on a vehicle pursuit before being found in a shed on a rural property in Port Stephens. Around 6:30pm last night, police were patrolling Nelson Bay Road at Williamtown when they sighted a man wanted on warrants. Police pursued the vehicle, a Ford Falcon, along Cabbage Tree Road, the Pacific Highway, and New England Highway, before terminating the chase on John Renshaw Drive in Beresfield. The vehicle was later found abandoned on Queens Wharf Road in Morpeth. With assistance from the Dog Unit, police conducted a search of the nearby area and a 27-year-old man was arrested after being located nearby in a rural farm shed. He was taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment to a laceration on his arm, where he remains under police guard. Charges are expected to be …

SECOND INQUIRY INTO WILLIAMTOWN CONTAMINATION UNDERWAY

A senate inquiry in Newcastle has heard Hunter Water knew about the ground water supply being contaminated by firefighting chemicals from the Williamtown RAAF base in 2013, but didn’t inform residents because there was no known risk. Chief Operating Officer, Dan Cleary, fronted the inquiry this morning and was questioned about the contamination of the Tomago sandbeds. He said Hunter Water was first made aware the base was using potentially toxic chemicals in 2009, and that in 2012 it knew ground water on the site had been contaminated. The inquiry has also heard from Port Stephens MP Kate Washington and the Professional Fishermans’ Association. We’ll bring you a full wrap of the inquiry in NBN News tonight at 6.

WILLIAMTOWN BUSHFIRE LATEST

Latest information from NSW RFS on the Williamtown bushfire: ADVICE LEVEL: Weather conditions have eased slightly and the fire has been downgraded to Advice. The fire is burning in bushland to the west of Nelson Bay Road, moving in a southerly direction towards Nelson Bay Road. Firefighters and aircraft are working to slow the spread of the fire. Nelson Bay Road is closed between Richardson Road and Cabbage Tree Road. Police are allowing travelers through to Newcastle Airport. Medowie Road is also closed due to smoke.

WILLIAMTOWN BUSHFIRE UPDATE

Firefighters are currently working to contain the bushfire in Williamtown, after it jumped Medowie Road late this afternoon. It’s now burning through shrub to both the east and north of the RAAF Base. Medowie Road remains closed to traffic as a precaution, with thick smoke continuing to fill the air.
