COMMUNITY MEETING HELD TO ADDRESS STORM AFTERMATH

Walcha residents and businesses affected by major internet outages over the Christmas period due to the storms were given some peace of mind at a community meeting. Walcha Shire Council Mayor Eric Noakes says while the problem has now been fixed, it’s important to ensure it won’t happen again down the track. “What’s happened has happened, we can’t change that, we’ve just got to move on and find a way that it doesn’t happen again. Get a better communication with Telstra which seems a funny way to put it, but we need to be able to get onto them quicker and get them here quicker to fix these problems.”

TELECOMMUNICATIONS FINALLY BEING RESTORED TO WALCHA

Telecommunications in Walcha are finally being restored, after some phone and internet services  were taken out during last month’s storms. In good news for shoppers and business owners, EFTPOS facilities are now back up and running. While the 3G service is working within the town, but the signal is weak in some parts. Telstra is sourcing equipment to address the issue, after a number of cables were damaged in the fierce weather. A town meeting will be hosted by Council on January 14. NOTE: VISION ONLY

INVESTIGATION CONTINUES INTO DOUBLE FATAL NEAR WALCHA

Crash investigators are still trying to piece together the moments leading up to a fatal crash east of Walcha yesterday. It’s understood a Tamworth family was travelling east on the Oxley Highway, towing a caravan when the vehicle left the road, and struck the guardrail before then hitting a tree. Two occupants, a 72-year-old female and 38-year-old man, died at the scene. While the driver, a 58-year-old man, and 38-year-old female passenger were flown to Tamworth Hospital, where they remain with non-life threatening injuries. Three pets were also in the car at the time – one dog was killed, while another survived. A cat is missing. NOTE: VISION ONLY

CAR TOWING CARAVAN CRASHES KILLING TWO PEOPLE EAST OF TAMWORTH

Two people have been killed in a car crash, east of Tamworth. Emergency crews were called to the Oxley Highway, near Walcha, following reports a vehicle towing a caravan had rolled. Two people died at the scene. Oxley Police, Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Ambulance and the Westpac Lifesaver Helicopter arrived a short time later, and worked to free a third person from the car. A crime scene has been established and investigations have been launched into the cause of the crash. The Oxley Highway is closed in both directions and will remain closed for a number of hours.

WALCHA EXPLORES OPTIONS FOR WATER SECURITY

Walcha Council’s plans for a larger water storage facility may be one step closer to reality – thanks to a $115-thousand grant from the state government. The funding will go towards a feasibility study to find the best option to future-proof the town’s water supply. It comes as the town is on the cusp of level four restrictions. Engineers are already on the ground working with Walcha Council to see the feasibility study completed within the next two to three months. “We will then submit them through the safe and secure water program – which I’m really pleased to say that there is a significant amount of money set aside in that program particularly in the conditions we’re in with drought,” Kevin Anderson, Member for Tamworth.
