MICK FANNING TO RETURN TO THE WATER

The Gold Coast’s Mick Fanning has his sights on a fourth world surfing championship after deciding to re-join the elite tour full-time for the first time since being attacked by a shark. The Australian competed part-time last year as he took time away following a tumultuous 2015, enduring the harrowing experience of fighting off a shark during the J-Bay Open in South Africa. “It was nice to have 2016 off somewhat and decompress but I’m excited to put the singlet on again,” Fanning, 35, said in a statement on Tuesday. Fanning also experienced the death of one of his brothers and the end of his marriage, admitting the year had taken its toll. “2015 was a tough year. CENTRAL COAST SURFERS NOMINATED FOR SURFING AUSTRALIA AWARDS

Two Central Coast surfers have made the cut for this year’s Australian surfing awards. It’s been an incredible 12 months for Copa’s Matt Wilkinson – nominated for Male Surfer of the Year. While Macy Callaghan is a finalist for the Rising Star and Female Surfer of the Year awards. The 16 year old won the Great Lakes Pro on the weekend, her fourth title for 20-17. MIXED FORTUNES FOR CENTRAL COAST SURFERS

Mixed results for Central Coast surfers at the Great Lakes Pro today. North Shelly’s Riley Laing progressed but Saxon Lumsden wasn’t so lucky. Avoca’s Macy Callaghan is the Coast’s only woman still in the draw. The 16 year-old cruised into round three with one of the highest heat scores of the day.

SOLID START FOR PHILIPPA ANDERSON AT GREAT LAKES PRO

Mixed fortunes for Hunter surfers at the Great Lakes Pro, with James McMorland knocked out in round two, while Chris Michalak dominated his third round heat. Merewether’s Philippa Anderson was equally effective in the women’s 1000-point qualifying series event at Boomerang. The 24-year-old scored an eight and a seven in round one, to outclass her three rivals in the inconsistent conditions. “It’s still really fun, there’s swell. We’ve had a few contests this year that were really small so even though it’s all over the shop, to have swell is really good.”

CENTRAL COAST SURFERS RIP AT GREAT LAKES PRO

Central Coast surfers have dominated day two at the Great Lakes Pro, with Avoca’s Dane Atcheson and Macy Callaghan leading the charge. 16-year-old Kirra-Belle Olsson secured the highest scoring wave of the opening round, with a 9.35. The Avoca product cruising through to round two. Joining her is North Shelly’s Zoe Ifield , following a top two finish.

They are best friends, but tomorrow Macy Callaghan and Kirra-belle Ollson will face off in Round three of the Tweed Coast Pro. In small, choppy conditions, the World Junior Champion worked hard to claim a top two finish. A 6.65 her highest scoring wave of the heat. The 16 year old is chasing her fourth title for the year.
