GREEN’S CALL FOR BALLINA KOALA PLAN DOCUMENTS

The Greens are calling on the state government to release all documents related to the Ballina Koala Plan. The report, which is a condition of approval in the Woolgoolga to Ballina stretch of the Pacific Highway upgrade, is currently before Federal Environment Minister, Greg Hunt. Greens Environment Spokesperson Dr Mehreen Faruqi says the report has been heavily criticised by ecologists. (NO AUDIO)

WORKERS VILLAGE APPROVED FOR WOODBURN

Hundreds working on the Pacific Highway upgrade are set to call Woodburn home, after Richmond Valley Council approved a temporary workers village in the town. 278 single accommodation rooms will be built on a block of land on the corner of Richmond and Duke streets. “There are 59 conditions for the approval to make sure the development fits on that site, and we minimise any impacts on the surrounding residential areas.” Installation is expected to be complete by September. CAR FIRE BRINGS HIGHWAY TO STAND-STILL

The Pacific Highway came to a stand-still near Yelgun this morning, after a car caught fire. Fire fighters were called to the south bound lane at around 7:30, to find the vehicle completely engulfed by flames. The crew managed to bring the blaze under control within an hour, but the vehicle later reignited on the back of a tow truck. Thankfully no one was injured in either incident. (NO AUDIO)

VALUABLE CAMERA COPS COMPLAINTS

Complaints of revenue raising have been levelled at the Baird Government, as it considers the future of a fixed speed camera on Hinterland Way near Ewingsdale. Shadow Roads Minister Jodi Mckay says the camera raises around $1.5-million in revenue every year. She claims despite that, the number of speeding offences have risen. Police disagree, saying the camera has significantly reduced the number of accidents in the area.

MAN DIES IN HEAD-ON PACIFIC HIGHWAY CRASH

A man has died in a head-on crash on the Pacific Highway at Cooperabung, north of Port Macquarie. He was driving south at around one o’clock this afternoon, when his van crossed into the path of an oncoming truck. The male truck driver wasn’t injured, but was taken to hospital for mandatory testing. The accident caused lengthy delays on the highway, with only one lane open to traffic. (VISION ONLY)

DRIVER ARRESTED FOR BREACHING BAIL

Police have charged a male driver with a range of offences, following a traffic stop overnight. The 41 year old was allegedly detected speeding south along the Pacific Highway near Tintenbar and was pulled over around 2.15 this morning. He was arrested and charged with breaching bail, driving while suspended and driving an unregistered vehicle.
