PACIFIC HIGHWAY UPGRADE TAKING SHAPE

After almost two years, construction of the new Hastings River bridge is complete. It’s part of the 23-kilometre Pacific Highway upgrade between the Oxley Highway and Kundabung. Although wet weather has caused some delays, the RMS says the project is still “generally” on track to open by Christmas. “We have a lot of challenges with the nature of our business that what we are, and what we try to do is recover from those, where we get particular delays on projects,” RMS Pacific Highway Manager Bob Higgins said. Upcoming work includes paving of the southbound carriageway, between the Oxley Highway interchange and Fernbank Creek.

HIGHWAY NOISE ASSESSMENT TO BE RELEASED

State and Federal Governments have made plenty of noise over the success of their Pacific Highway upgrades, but for some living along the Urunga to Nambucca Heads stretch it’s been too much. Twelve months after it opened, a noise assessment report is due to be released next month. It will help residents work out if they’re overstating the problem, or if the $780 million dollar upgrade fails to manage the sound increased by the 22km dual carriageway. The findings will be discussed at community information sessions later next month.

FLOOD RESCUES IN NORTHERN NSW AFTER PEOPLE IGNORE WARNINGS

At least three flood rescues have been carried out in northern New South Wales, as a low and trough continues to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the region. The rescues have been the result of people ignoring flood warnings. Floodwater has closed the Pacific Highway in both directions between Grafton and Ballina, and the highway is expected to remain closed until at least 11:00pm tonight. Significant downpours have been recorded across the region. Yamba recieved 157mm in the 24 hours to 9am today, bringing the monthly total to 418mm, more than double the average. Careys Peak (179mm) and Bellingen (142mm) also received significant downpours until 6am this morning, while Red Hill, Woolgoolga and Comboyne have all recorded more than 100mm each. A severe weather warning is in place for the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, Hunter and Northern …

Construction started on the 30-kilometre stretch between Glenugie and Tyndale in November last year, with major works from Maclean to Broadwater to begin soon. More than 70 per cent of the highway upgrade is now complete. (VISION ONLY)

ROGUE ROUNDABOUT CLAIMS YET ANOTHER HAPLESS HIGHWAY VICTIM

A notorious Pacific Highway blackspot south of Coffs Harbour has caused more dramas for motorists. The driver of this B-Double was taken to hospital early this morning with chest pains after his rig failed to make it through the England’s Road roundabout. The northbound vehicle jack-knifed, blocking one lane shortly before 4am. Its cargo remained in tact and the truck wasn’t damaged but a fuel tank rupture meant Fire and Rescue crews had to close the highway, while they attended to a 300 litre diesel spill.
