MINE WORKERS SACKED BEFORE XMAS

In a bitter blow just days out from Christmas, nearly 400 mineworkers have been sacked at Muswellbrook’s Mount Pleasant mine. Mine owner, Mach Energy has terminated a joint venture between Calibre and DRA Global that affects 170 direct employees and 218 sub-contractors. G&S Engineering was awarded a $149-million contract last year, to design and build a coal handling plant and rail-loading facility at the Mount Pleasant mine. The CFMEU says the workers have been blindsided by the decision and that it’s uncalled for so close to Christmas. “The workers should have been retained as the workforce for whoever Mach Energy bring on board to complete the project,” said CFMEI organiser Mark Cross. MAN CHARGED AFTER POLICE OFFICERS THREATENED WITH KNIVES

A man’s been charged after two police officers were threatened with a knife in the Hunter Valley. Police were called to a unit on Skellatar Street, Muswellbrook after receiving a noise complaint. They will allege that he was heavily intoxicated and armed with two knives, threatening to stab them on approach. The 44-year old man eventually dropped his weapons and was arrested. He was taken to Muswellbrook Police Station and charged with assault of a police officer. The man will face Muswellbrook Local Court today.

CATTLE TRUCK ROLLS IN HUNTER VALLEY

A B-Double carrying a load of cattle has left the road and rolled, bringing down powerlines in the Hunter Valley this morning. The crash occurred about 3.50am, near the intersection of Jerry’s Plains Road and Denman Road near Muswellbrook. The male truck driver was not seriously injured. Local veterinarians are on site to assist with removing the cattle from the truck. Traffic diversions are in place.

64-YEAR-OLD WOMAN DROWNS AFTER CAR SWEPT OFF CAUSEWAY

A woman has died after the car she was in was swept off a causeway in the Hunter Valley on Thursday night. Police say the 64-year-old woman and her 74-year-old husband were driving across a causeway in Gungal, about 60km west of Muswellbrook, when it was consumed by floodwater. The man escaped and searched for his trapped wife into the night without success. Divers discovered the woman’s body in the vehicle around 5pm last night, submerged in 4 metres water in the Worondi Riveulet.

POLICE INVESTIGATING MUSWELLBROOK HOUSE FIRE

Police have established a crime scene after a suspicious house fire in the Hunter Valley this morning. Around 12:40am, police and emergency services responded to reports of a house fire in Tindale Street, Muswellbrook. Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze. Accoring to police, the house was unattended and no one was injured. Police are treating the blaze as suspicious.

MUSWELLBROOK MAN AIRLIFTED AFTER DEATH ADDER SNAKE BITE

A 48 year old man has been airlifted to Newcastle after an encounter with a death adder snake in the Upper Hunter. Just before three this afternoon paramedics were called to a Muswellbrook home, following reports the man had been bitten below the knee while in his shed. He was initially taken by ambulance to Scone Hospital where he was treated with anti-venom, before being flown to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Base in Broadmeadow. He was then transported by ambulance to the Mater Calvary Hospital.

UPDATED: ——————– A man reported missing from Muswellbrook has been found safe and well. The 38-year-old man was found north of Singleton a short time ago. ——————– Police are appealing for information, after a 38-year-old man went missing from his home in Muswellbrook. Jamie Priestley was reported missing yesterday afternoon by family members, after he failed to turn up for work. He was last spoken to about 9pm on Wednesday, but there are concerns for his welfare as his disappearance is considered out of character. Police are on the lookout for his white 2014-model Nissan dual cab, with NSW registration CA-96-QU. Police believe he may be in the Singleton area.
