WOLLONGBAR ALSTONVILLE WIPE OUT LISMORE

Lennox Head remains unbeaten after defeating Southern Cross University in round two of Far North Coast Rugby Union. With scores locked at 7 all, the side lifted in the second half to beat SCU 22 points to 12. Meanwhile, Byron Bay disposed of long time rivals Ballina 24 to 13. Bangalow fell to Casino and Wollongbar Alstonville wiped out Lismore 64 to 19. Steven Mison and Nat Regueira topped the victor’s try scorers list, each crossing twice, while Sam Kerry kicked five conversions throughout the match. The competition now takes a week off while the New South Wales Country Championships are played. (VISION ONLY)

LAKE AINSWORTH UPGRADES TO GO AHEAD

Proposed upgrades to the Lake Ainsworth precinct will go ahead as planned, despite strong community opposition. Ballina Shire Council voted in favour of proceeding with the project, seven votes to three at today’s meeting. “I just ask people who are opposed to councils moves, to actually go onto the website, have a look at the concept plan, see the improvements that are going there… And then imagine how great it will be.” The road on the lake’s eastern bank will now ripped up and the space converted into a park, with additional parking spaces added nearby. LENNOX DEFEAT BALLINA IN UNION SEASON OPENER

Wollongbar Alstonville has obliterated Casino in Far North Coast Rugby Union’s opening round. Casino didn’t cross once, while its opposition piled on a whopping 107 points. Lismore didn’t fare much better in its first hit-out against Byron Bay, going down 74-7. In a much closer game, Bangalow defeated Southern Cross 32 to 27. While Ballina went down to Lennox Head 8 points to 14. Despite several penalties going Ballina’s way, a single try from Ryan Boardman and penalty goal to Mitch Knight wasn’t enough to walk away with victory. Hayden Blair and Jack Tyndall each crossed once for Lennox, with Billy Goldsmith kicking both conversions. (VISION ONLY)

LOPSIDED VICTORIES PUNCTUATE PREMIER LEAGUE 3RD ROUND

The Bangalow Bluedogs have taken a bite out of the Lismore Workers, 5-1 winners in round three  of Football Far North Coast’s premier league. The Lismore thistles, meanwhile, didn’t fare well in their match against Byron Bay… The Rams not conceding a single goal for the second week running. Elsewhere, the Casino Cobras defeated Villa FC in a close match while the Italo Stars proved no match for reigning premiers the Richmond Rovers, and Goonellabah comprehensively defeated Lennox Head.

ACCUSED TALLOW BEACH ATTACKER FACES COURT

A woman who allegedly stabbed a 41-year-old man during a domestic incident at Tallow Beach on Monday night, has faced court today. 33-year-old Jessica Walshe was taken into custody at Lennox Head yesterday afternoon. She was then charged with a string of offences including reckless wounding, contravening an AVO and malicious damage. No bail application was made when her matter was heard in Lismore Local Court. She’ll reappear in Byron Bay Local Court tomorrow. (VISION ONLY)

LAKE ROAD PROTESTORS TO MEET MAYOR

Following a heated demonstration over the weekend, protestors fighting to keep Lake Ainsworth’s eastern road open have agreed to meet with Ballina Shire Mayor David Wright later this week. Councillor Wright says he wants to reach a compromise both parties can agree on. Council had planned to close the road later this month to improve the overall amenity of the site. (AUDIO IN PARTS)

MIXED RESULTS IN PREMIER LEAGUE OPENER

There’s been mixed results for round one of the Football Far North Coast premier league competition. As expected, reigning premiers the Richmond Rovers dominated the Lismore Workers. Villa FC defeated the in-form Lismore Thistles 2 – 1. The Bluedogs fell short against Byron Bay . While Lennox Head sealed a late win over the Stars.
