RED ALERT: TOXIC BLUE-GREEN ALGAE IN POPULAR SWIMMING SPOT

A red alert has been issued, warning swimmers not to enter Lake Ainsworth at Lennox Head, due to an outbreak of toxic blue-green algae. Warning signs went up at the swimming hot-spot this morning and will remain in place until the algae is gone. People who have been swimming in the lake in recent days are advised to watch out for gastro symptoms and rashes. The popular lake is expected to be closed for at least two weeks. (VISION ONLY)

LAKE AINSWORTH STILL “OKAY” TO SWIM IN

Ballina Shire Council’s environmental health officers are keeping a close eye on algae levels at Lake Ainsworth, after members of the public reported seeing scum on the shorelines. Toxic blue-green algae can cause nausea and skin irritation. “The lake is still okay for swimming at the moment but we have done an additional test today just to make sure because things can change quite quickly if there is a bloom starting to occur.” Check Ballina Shire Council website for the most up to date information.

LENNOX PARK DAMAGED BY VANDALS

Police are appealing for witnesses after the Epiq Sporting Fields in Lennox Head were damaged just before 8 o’clock this morning. An off-duty police officer witnessed the incident, describing the driver as a male aged in his late teens. It’s believed the offender made off in a blue Subaru, with possible damage to the rear of the car. Anyone with information should contact Ballina Police.

‘GIRL TO WOMAN’ FESTIVAL AXED

The controversial ‘Girl to Woman’ Festival will NOT go ahead after organisers pulled the plug. The festival has come under fire for its alleged links to Universal Medicine, which a Supreme Court jury previously branded a “socially harmful cult.” The decision came hours before Ballina Shire Council was set to debate a motion which could have seen the festival banned from council venues. Despite this, Councillor Keith Williams says changes to Council’s statement of business ethics needed to be amended. “We wanted to make sure that our staff where empowered, that if that arose again they could make a clear decision not to hire facilities to groups like that. TWO CHILDREN APPROACHED ON THE FAR NORTH COAST

Police are investigating two separate child approaches in the state’s north recently. About 10.30am on Tuesday, a man approached a nine-year-old girl at a festival in Ballina Street in Lennox Head. He was told to leave the event by organisers. Then around 5pm the same day, a 10-year-old girl was approached by a man at Belongil Beach in Byron Bay. The girl left the beach with her family and the man left the scene. Police believe the incidents are linked. The man has been described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged in his 60s, 177cm-179cm tall, solid build with grey facial hair. He was seen wearing wooden beads, rainbow-coloured shirt, tights and a black beanie and was seen driving a light grey Volkswagen transporter.

COMMUNITY RALLIES BEHIND CRASH VICTIM’S FAMILY

Locals are rallying behind the family of a Lennox Head mother, killed in a crash on the Bruxner Highway last Tuesday. Amanda Nash died after the vehicle she was travelling in collided with an oncoming truck near Alstonville. A crowdfunding campaign launched 4 days ago, has already received over $70,000 worth of donations. Nash is survived by her husband Ryder and 3 year old daughter Bonnie.
