GOLD COAST FLOOD CLEAN UP CONTINUES

Emergency services have been flat out cleaning up around the Gold Coast after yesterday’s deluge. Volunteers worked into the night and all through today, mopping up at more than 100 homes. Despite the efforts of emergency services and neighbours, many low lying properties were inundated. The SES says it’s a reminder to residents to clean out their gutters, prepare sandbags and secure backyard items before severe storms hit.

VOLLEYBALLERS ALMOST WASHED OUT BY RAIN AND JELLYFISH

Some of the world’s best volleyball players have hit the sand for a three day tournament at Surfers Paradise. The Australian Beach Volleyball grand slam has attracted more than 40 teams. The heats kept crowds entertained today. Teams have been taking the bad weather in their stride. Some of the courts were unusable after being inundated by floodwater and jellyfish.

MAN FACES COURT OVER DOUBLE MURDER

A five-year-old boy is orphaned and a community in mourning after a shocking incident on the Gold Coast. The boy’s parents were stabbed to death inside the family home on Tuesday night, but the grisly scene – and young boy – remained undiscovered for 24 hours.

PICKERING IN A PICKLE

Counter-terrorism police have paid a visit to Gold Coast based cartoonist Larry Pickering, after he published a controversial image of Mohammad. In response to the terror attacks in Paris, Pickering published a cartoon on his website depicting the Prophet as a pig on a spit with a pencil through his body. The award winning cartoonist says no direct threat has been made against him, but he’s taking the police warning seriously. “It was more like look if you’re going to continue to do this please give us warning next time and I said look I will be doing it. I won’t back off , free speech is the most valuable thing we have”.
