On the day Paul Okon arrived the Mariners, club legend John Hutchinson departed. The 44 year-old former Socceroo Captain revealed he turned down an A-League Head coaching role in 2013 due to lack of experience. He now believes he’s ready to take the next step in his career.

MARINERS COME AWAY 2-1 WINNERS AGAINST NEWCASTLE IN TAMWORTH

The Newcastle Jets have gone down to F3 rivals the Central Coast Mariners, in their first pre-season clash at Tamworth this afternoon. Just minutes into the match, the Jets were unable to capitalise on an early chance from Wayne Brown – Hooles’ second effort also falling short. The Jets again hit the wood work in the 29th minute… Newcastle finally broke through a short time later, with this strike from Devante Clut. But their lead was short lived, with Blake Powell prodding one home from close range. Into the second half, the Mariners carried their momentum – Connor Pain striking from just outside the 18-yard-box. Two-one the final score.

MARINERS TERMINATE TONY

Back to the Mariners now, and Tony Walmsley’s departure comes just a fortnight after the club settled its wrongful dismissal case against Phil Moss. John Hutchinson was immediately ruled out as a replacement – the former skipper doesn’t have the qualifications.

IVAN GETS GIG FOR CUP OPENER

The Mariners have departed for Melbourne ahead of their FFA Cup clash with Green Gully tomorrow night. Coach Tony Walmsley has selected six new players in the squad, and he’s given Ivan Necevski the first opportunity to secure the main gig as goalkeeper.

APPIAH AND BURGESS ON TRIAL AT MARINERS

After adding a number of big names in the off-season, the Mariners are trialling Kwabena Appiah and Max Burgess. 24 year-old Appiah, known for his blistering pace, was part of the club’s original Youth Team in 2011, and has made over 40 A-League appearances with the Western Sydney Wanderers and Wellington. Meanwhile Burgess featured for the Jets last season, as well as Sydney FC’s youth set-up. (Audio in parts)
