MAGPIES CELEBRATE 11-POINT WIN OVER THE BOMBERS

In the Black Diamond AFL, the Wyong Lakes Magpies are still celebrating their dramatic 11-point comeback victory over the Killarney-Vale Bombers. The boys in black-and-white battled through player injuries and bizarre weather conditions yesterday to claim their third home win of the season. Club President Simon Wood says they’re quickly becoming the team to beat. Wyong-Lakes now sit sixth on the BDAFL ladder, facing¬†Singleton next in Round 7 at Rose Point Park. (audio in parts)

NEWCASTLE CITY DOMINANT IN WIN OVER SINGLETON

They’re back home at Number 1 Sportsground and Newcastle City certainly made it their own today. They put new-comers Singleton to the sword, holding them goalless until the final term. Jackson Crawford was a standout booting four, while Brady Sweetnam bagged two goals. City far too strong and didn’t their fans love it. Cardiff remain on top with another big win, Terrigal-Avoca beat their crosstown rivals… Wyong beat Killarney Vale while the Bulldogs hammered the Bay.

BLACK DIAMOND AFL GETS UNDERWAY AS HAWKS CLAIM VICTORY OVER CITY

The Black Diamond AFL competition also began today, Newcastle City’s Hayden Cabinar booted the first major. But last year’s Grand Finalists, the Cardiff Hawks eventually ran away with the contest, in what was a tough affair at Hillsborough Oval. The Hawks finished as 15 point winners underlining their credentials for another successful campaign. But they’ll have plenty of competition – Terrigal-Avoca huge winners as they look to go back-to-back… Maitland won its first game, so did Wyong Lakes, they impressed against Gosford while the Dogs got up against the Bombers.

GREENS CLAIM ROUND 1 VICTORY OVER WANDERERS

Merewether-Carlton claimed cross-town bragging rights with a 15-13 win over Wanderers in the opening round of local rugby but it wasn’t without its drama – the Two Blues had a chance to win the game in the final moments. Luke Simmons lined it up from 40 metres out – his attempt had the legs, but sailed just wide. Elsewhere this afternoon, Maitland proved they are the real deal in 2018 beating Southern Beaches in a high-scoring affair. Singleton thrashed Lake Macquarie for an emphatic win, and the Bay beat the Students.

5 NEW TEAMS A FEATURE OF REVAMPED BDAFL

The new-look Black Diamond AFL begins tomorrow. Five new teams will hit the field for the first time, taking the total number of clubs to 11. It’s the first year the league has come under the governance of AFL New South Wales-ACT. And it’ll get underway with a blockbuster – Cardiff hosting Newcastle City in a Hunter derby.

BDAFL RESTRUCTURE FOR 2018

The Black Diamond AFL is expanding. The men’s comp will now feature 11 Hunter and Central Coast sides. The women’s comp, an incredible 16 teams – just four years after it began. It comes as a new governance model has finally been reached, in principle. Juniors and seniors will now be aligned under the one body.
