ISAAC HEENEY WELCOMES FIRST FEMALES TO SWANS ACADEMY

He’s a graduate of the Swans academy, so it was fitting that Isaac Heeney was on hand last night, to welcome the first female athletes to the club’s Youth Girls Program. “Had a bit of a speech to them and yeah we talked through what it’s like being in the academy and the opportunity they’ve got in front of them.” 130 girls, including several from the Hunter, will start with a 12-week training program on April 30. Meanwhile Heeney and his teammates will be looking to continue their strong start to the AFL season when they host Adelaide tomorrow. “It’s a lot better than last year. We’ve come out and we’re confident. We’re not playing our trademark football but were confident we can play some good football and believe we have over the past 3 out of the 4 weeks.”

SWANS PREVAIL IN CLASH WITH WESTERN BULLDOGS

AFL and the Bombers comfortably accounted for Port Adelaide.. Hawthorn demolished Melbourne. Last night – the Eagles smashed the Suns, Carlton had no answers for North Melbourne and the Swans won an absolute thriller over the Western Bulldogs. The Dogs boasted a 22-point lead early in the second quarter – but Buddy Franklin proved the difference. Newcastle product Isaac Heeney again proved he’s a star on the rise. After a goal-less first half, Franklin booted the go-ahead major in the last term – to help Sydney move ahead. But it was Ollie Florent with the icing on the cake.

PORT ADELAIDE CLAIM 23 POINT WIN OVER SWANS

The Sydney Swans will need to get back to basics, if they’re to beat the Giants in the Sydney derby this weekend. Leading Port Adelaide by 14 points at half time last night, the Power booted 7 goals in the third quarter to run away with a 23 point win. Despite the loss, it was another strong showing from Lance “Buddy” Franklin, adding four goals, while Newcastle’s Isaac Heeney scored one of his own. “It’s hard to look at the positives now when there’s so many negatives but the likes of Buddy etc playing their roles still so we just need to get back to the basics and really focus on that”

NORTH COAST’S JAKE BROWN DRAFTED BY SYDNEY SWANS

Former Grafton and Coffs Harbour AFL junior, Jake Brown, has been drafted by the Sydney Swans. The 19-year-old former Sydney Swans Academy member is the first north coast player to be drafted into the AFL senior ranks. Brown, who started training with the Swans today, recently spent a period in rehab recovering from a back injury. He says his goal is to make it through the pre-season training before pushing for a chance to run out at AFL level.
