FLORES DOWNS ACE IN EPIC

Avoca’s Ace Buchan has been eliminated from the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast in what’s been described as the heat of the contest so far. He went down against Jeremy Flores, who claimed victory by zero point three. But the Frenchman, couldn’t replicate the feat against Matt Wilkinson; the reigning champ triumphant 15.1 to 14.6

SHAKY START FOR WRIGHT ON THE GOLD COAST

Tyler Wright’s world title defence is off to a shaky start, with the former Lennox Head surfer beaten in round one of the tour opener on the Gold Coast. Wright caught 13 waves in the inconsistent conditions, but couldn’t match fellow Aussie Nikki Van Dijk, who produced an eight and a six. Better news for Sally Fitzgibbons. She was chasing a solid score in the final minute of her heat. “A pretty serious hack off the top, right into a snap, and fades it one more time.” A seven point nine saw her advance straight to round three.

LE ROMAIN PREPARES TO TAKE ON THE BEST

Multiple Group 1 winner Le Romain completed a serious gallop at Broadmeadow before sunrise this morning, as it prepares to take on the all-conquering Winx at Rosehill on Saturday, in the $1-million George Ryder Stakes. Trainer Kris Lees isn’t expecting a miracle, but says the gelding has earned a shot at Winx, following its Canterbury Stakes victory at Randwick. Tomorrow, Lees will be one of three Hunter trainers sending runners to the Provincial Championship heat at Gosford. He believes Twist Tops and Raido can be effective on a heavy track. Unfortunately for local racing fans, Lees has confirmed Sense of Occasion won’t run in Friday’s Group Three Newmarket Handicap, and will instead be prepared for the Doncaster in two weeks.

PLENTY TO CELEBRATE IN KNIGHTS FIRST WIN IN ALMOST A YEAR

In the Knights win and there were plenty of highlights for the home side. Starting at fullback for the first time, Brendan Elliott opened the scoring for the boys in red and blue. Forward Jack Stockwell grabbed his second try in two weeks, while Nathan Ross bagged a double, taking his tally for the season to four after just two rounds. There was a special moment for Sam Stone, son of former coach Rick. Skipper Trent Hodkinson says it’s now important for Newcastle to build on the win.
