KNIGHTS PAULI PAULI THANKS FANS FOR THEIR SUPPORT

Knights forward Pauli Pauli has taken to social media to thank everyone for their support during his family’s recovery from a serious multi-car crash, north of Sydney. The family suffered a range of injuries, but say they’re just thankful they survived. Meanwhile, club legend Danny Buderus says Newcastle will overcome its recent setbacks. “It’s the cards we’ve been dealt up there, cards we’ve been dealt for a while, the thing that is bolted on though is the fans, the fans are never going to waver, membership is strong.”

OWEN WRIGHT TO MAKE HIS LONG AWAITED RETURN AT SURFEST

The surfing world will be looking to Newcastle next month with Owen Wright set to make his return to competition at Surfest, more than a year after an horrific injury at Pipeline. Wright was in the world title race when he wiped out at the infamous break, suffering head trauma. He’s in the men’s field, alongside the likes of Matt Wilkinson and Joel Parkinson. Championship tour surfers Julian Wilson, Stu Kennedy and Jack Freestone will also return… While the women’s draw is just as strong, featuring Stephanie Gilmore and Sally Fitzgibbons.

THREE JETS NAMED FOR AUSTRALIAN UNDER 23 TRAINING CAMP

Young Jets Lachlan Jackson, Nick Cowburn and Devante Clut have been selected for an Australian under-23 training camp on the Central Coast next week. Meanwhile Andrew Hoole, Wayne Brown and Morten Nordstrand are all expected back for Friday’s clash with Melbourne City in Coffs Harbour. The good news comes off the back of Newcastle’s two-nil loss to Wanderers. Coach Mark Jones says his side lacked polish, but the Jets are still gunning for a place in the finals. “We’ve just been undefeated for six weeks so at some point you’re going to lose a game. Muscat said the same thing. Victory have lost a couple but Melbourne I’m sure their belief doesn’t change and nor will ours.”

Five Central Coast players were named in the Olyroos squad this afternoon, for a three day training camp in Gosford next week. Meanwhile, the Mariners Youth team missed its chance to qualify for the Grand Final – going down to Sydney FC three-nil.

JETS W-LEAGUE WIN OVER SYDNEY KEEPS FINALS HOPES ALIVE

The finals aspirations of the Jets women are hanging in the balance, despite their impressive win over Sydney FC last night. The Wanderers today beat Canberra to push Newcastle back to fifth, while Melbourne City beat Brisbane to leapfrog the Jets into fourth. The situation on the ladder takes nothing away from the win over the league-leading Sky Blues. After missing a penalty against Brisbane last round, American import Arin Gilliland scored a second half hat-trick. Newcastle must now beat Melbourne City in the final round in Coffs Harbour, to have any chance of finishing in the top four.
