STEPHEN MOORE STEPS DOWN

The second-most capped Wallaby of all time, Stephen Moore, has declared in Newcastle today this will be his final Test season. Moore has opted to give up the captaincy immediately and will step down after this year’s Spring Tour. He will however play just one more season of Super Rugby for the Queensland Reds. During the 34-year-old’s 120 test career, he played in three world cups and captained the team to a the final in 2015.

KNIGHTS SIGNING SPREE CONTINUES

The Newcastle Knights have confirmed forward Herman Ese’ese has signed a three-year contract, commencing next year. The 22-year-old has played 23 NRL matches after making his debut at the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in 2015 before joining the Brisbane Broncos the following year. “It is exciting to be able to announce Herman’s signing and we look forward to welcoming him to the Club next season,” says CEO Matt Gidley. “Herman is a young, explosive forward with a lot of great football ahead of him. “He not only fits into our long-term plans but importantly, he is coming to the Club because he wants to be part of our future success.” Ese’ese will join Kalyn Ponga, Tautau Moga, Connor Watson and and Aidan Guerra at the Club in 2018, they join Shaun Kenny-Dowall who arrived at the Club mid-season.

MARINERS BEAT JETS IN PRE SEASON FRIENDLY

The Central Coast Mariners have beaten Newcastle in a behind-closed doors trial match at Tuggerah. Josh Bingham and former Jet Andrew Hoole did the damage. The Jets continue to bolster their squad, signing former Mariners fullback Jake Adelson for two years. While goalkeeping coach Jess Vanstrattan will depart the club, to pursue a position at Melbourne City.

OPALS ADVANCE TO QUARTER FINALS AT ASIA CUP

The Australian women’s basketball team has advanced to the quarter finals of the Asia Cup, thanks to a nine point win over Japan. The Japanese side was on a 17-game winning streak against Asian opponents, but the Opals took charge early. The Hunter’s Katie Rae Ebzery had another big game, shooting three from three from beyond the arc. “Ebzery from the right and nails it.” The Opals will now face North Korea for the chance to advance to the semi finals… and a guaranteed place at the World Cup.

PAPADATOS VERY HAPPY WITH LAST MINUTE CALL UP

A depleted field at last week’s Open Golf Championship in Britain, has seen Central Coast golfer Dimi Papadatos offered a last minute invite to the European Open in Germany this week. The 25-year-old’s late call up came as a result of a sponsor’s invite to the prestigious Hamburg event.This will be Papadatos’ 42nd professional event, having turned pro three ago.
