CANADA BEATS USA IN ICE HOCKEY CLASSIC CLASH IN NEWCASTLE

Canada has beaten the US in the first game of the Ice Hockey Classic Tour of Australia, played in front of a sell-out crowd at the home of the Newcastle North Stars last night. The game lacked the aggression usually associated with clashes between the two nations, but the skill was world class. A late fightback by the Americans wasn’t enough, as Canada won seven goals to five. The tour moves to Sydney this Saturday.

TOPOR’S BACK FOR JETS

Towering defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley will return to the Newcastle Jets for the next two seasons The four-time Socceroo played 81 games for the Jets between 2009 and 2012 before leaving for Western Sydney. The centre back helped the Wanderers to three Grand Final appearances and an Asian Champions League title. More recently he’s been playing with Hatta Club in the UAE Gulf League. “I have had a good history of playing football in this region and I know the passion that the people have for their team,” Topor-Stanley said. “I know that the people are very proud people here and the fact that they haven’t had that much success recently means it will be even sweeter when we do reach that.” “There is a long road ahead and I am really looking forward to getting out on the training track. …

OUTTERIDGE AND JENSEN OUT OF AMERICA’S CUP CONTENTION

Team New Zealand has earned a rematch with Team USA in the battle for the America’s Cup, after the Kiwis outclassed Artemis Racing in the Challenger Playoffs. Race seven was initially abandoned when the wind died, but from the restart, Team New Zealand took control against the Swedish crew, featuring Australians Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen. Outteridge says the US could be in trouble in the main event. “I really hope that for the defenders sake they’ve improved boat speed because NZ have stepped it up and if Oracle haven’t improved over the past few weeks they’re going to have a run for their money there.”

ANOTHER HAIR-RAISING MOMENT FOR OUTTERIDGE AND JENSEN AT THE AMERICA’S CUP

There’s been another hair-raising moment for Aussie sailors Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen at the America’s Cup. Their boat Artemis Racing turned sharply, and briefly nose-dived overnight – but the crew recovered to win the race and tie the Challenger finals series at two-all. Team New Zealand then won back-to-back races, leaving Outteridge and Jensen needing to win three straight, for outright victory. “I think if we just take some errors out of our sailing and just really keep sailing aggressively like we are at the start and putting pressure on Team New Zealand then I’m sure we can win three.”
