LANGFORD AND TEAM BRUNEL WIN TOUGH LEG SEVEN

Lake Macquarie sailor Kyle Langford and his crewmates onboard Team Brunel have scored a narrow victory on the 7,800 nautical mile leg seven of the Volvo Ocean Race, arriving in Brazil early this morning. With a sailor from a rival boat lost at sea midway through the stage, it’s being remembered as one of the toughest in the event’s history. Fellow Hunter competitors Chris Nicholson and Lucas Chapman are expected to arrive in port later tonight.

BEN SIMMONS RECEIVES MORE HIGH PRAISE IN THE NBA

NBA legend Dr J has described Australia’s Ben Simmons as a once-in-a-decade, or even once-in-a-lifetime player. Simmons has led Philadelphia to a victory over Brooklyn, its 11th straight win, the first time the franchise has achieved that feat since 1990. The 21-year-old finished with 15 points, 12 assists and six rebounds… and seems to be warming to the idea of being named Rookie of the Year. “Umm I think it’s definitely right. It’s pretty accurate.”

Buddy Franklin was the star of the show kicking eight goals in the Swans 29-point season opening win against West Coast. Former Cardiff Hawk Isaac Heeney was one of Sydney’s best, he finished the game with 26 disposals and a handy goal. “He’s got All Australian written all over him. Maybe even this year Isaac Heeney. Massive star. And he thinks his way through that brilliantly. Perfection from the pocket.”

VOLVO OCEAN RACE HEADS FOR MOST REMOTE PLACE ON EARTH

The Volvo Ocean Race is about to reach a unique point known as Point Nemo, the most remote place on the planet, halfway between New Zealand and the tip of South America. The closest humans to the sailors are likely to be on the International Space Station, 400 kilometres above. Heavy winds and the occasional snow storm are making matters even more difficult. “Half the time you’re not really in control. You’re hanging on for dear life. But it’s fun at the same time.” At this point, Kyle Langford’s Team Brunel leads the race, with Lucas Chapman’s Turn the Tide on Plastic in fourth.

NRL ROUND 3 HIGHLIGHTS

The Broncos have secured their second straight victory in Round 3 of the NRL, with a controversial win over the Wests Tigers. Brisbane looked to have the game sured up with a 78th minute field goal, but just a minute later Luke Brooks booted one for the Tigers to send the game into golden point extra time. In the end the Broncos walk away with a 9 – 7 victory after a being gifted a penalty and ultimately, the game in front of 11,000 fans at Campbelltown Stadium.
