FUNDS FLOOD INTO LISMORE

The region is being inundated with election promises, the latest coming from Labor, committing to a $12-million National Institute for Flood Resilience at Southern Cross University. The Institute will include a new network of smart sensors and the establishment of a Flood Response Centre. “It means greater capacity for research but also greater capacity to put that research into practice in the local community to work closely with landholders to better predict floods.” Labor says the Institute will complement the existing National Centre for Flood Research. WOMAN WINCHED FROM REMOTE BUSHLAND NEAR MOUNT WARNING

A 32-year-old woman had to be winched from bushland in the state’s far-north on Sunday afternoon, after she broke her leg. The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter was called to an area near Mount Warning, inserting in a paramedic to assess the injured bushwalker. She was winched from the remote location, and flown to Tweed Heads Hospital in a stable condition.

PUTTING THE KOALA ON THE POLITICAL AGENDA

More than 30 volunteers will doorknock homes across Lismore this weekend to make deforestation and the conservation of koalas a priority in the state election. According to the Nature Conservation Council, in the last 20 years koala populations have plummeted by 50% on the North Coast. “All political parties to protect koala habitat and other high conservation forests and bushlands and to also engage in a fund to restore the forests and bushland.” The ‘end deforestation’ campaign will include more doorknocks, candidate forums and petitions. WOMAN CHARGED OVER ALSTONVILLE CRASH

A 33-year-old woman has been charged over a fatal crash at Alstonville on the state’s north coast last August. BREAKING: A 33yo woman will front Lismore Local Court next month charged with negligent driving. Her car collided with Jeremy Plooy’s motorbike in August last year, fatally injuring him @nbnnews pic.twitter.com/uB79JHEhde — Georgia Anderson (@GAndersonNews) February 2, 2019 The accident claimed the life of a 39-year-old man, after the motorbike he was riding was struck by a Nissan Elgrand at the intersection of Ballina Road and the Bruxner Highway. Following an investigation a 33-year-old woman was charged with negligent driving occasioning death, along with two counts of not giving way to a vehicle. She’ll face Lismore Local Court next month.
