SPARKS FLY AS STOCKTON POWER POLE CATCHES FIRE

A burning power pole proved a challenge for firefighters near Newcastle overnight, throwing sparks into the evening sky. Crews were called to the Stockton North boat ramp at around 10:20, where they found the pole well alight. NEWCASTLE BOARDING HOUSE RESIDENTS NOW HOMELESS

Dozens of Newcastle men are tonight on the street, after being evicted from their boarding homes. Newcastle City Council has taken the stern approach due to fire safety issues, but it’s left several vulnerable men with no roof over their heads. Link to full news story under the statement. CITY OF NEWCASTLE STATEMENT TO NBN NEWS: Alternative accommodation has been found for the vast majority of men displaced from three boarding houses issued with emergency closure orders earlier this month due to significant fire safety concerns. Thirty of the 32 men who have so far registered for assistance have found or been offered a place to stay thanks to the fantastic efforts of support service providers coordinated by Matthew Talbot Homeless Service. DRIVERS CAUTIONED DURING HEAVY RAINFALL PERIOD

The SES is warning drivers to be vigilant and cautions in the wet weather, with almost 50mL of rain forecast for Newcastle and the Central Coast over the next two days. “Just obviously stay calm, stay indoors if the weather system does intensify at the moment. H&M OPENS AT WESTFIELD KOTARA

Shoppers flocked to Westfield Kotara today, for the opening of the latest international retailer to set up shop – H&M. It’s the first major store to open as part of Westfield’s $160 million redevelopment plan. “We’ve been waiting for something like this for a long time, it’s added a great feel to the centre.” Fellow fashion retailer Zara will open its first Hunter store at Kotara in the coming months. 650 METRES OF COPPER WIRE STOLEN FROM LAKE MACQUARIE

Twelve hundred homes in Lake Macquarie lost power over the long weekend after would-be thieves interfered with live power lines. Emergency crews were called to a fault at Marks Point early Saturday morning, to find the base of a power pole exposed – in an attempt to remove copper wire, sparking a fire and causing significant damage. So far this year, 500 metres of copper wire has been stolen from Awaba Road and another 150-metres of live overhead lines have been cut down at the Toronto West substation.

EVICTED RESIDENTS LEAVE NEWCASTLE BOARDING HOUSE

An eleventh hour attempt has been launched by boarding house landlord Aaron Buman to save 55 men from eviction at three non-compliant boarding houses in Newcastle. Mr Buman’s legal representatives have written to Newcastle Council in a final bid to buy more time, as his tenants continue to search for emergency accomodation. The evictions are due to come into effect from midnight. (Audio in part)
