SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING FOR HUNTER & MID NORTH COAST

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of the Hunter and Mid North Coast. Damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall is expected over the next few hours, with multiple locations including Newcastle, Gosford, Singleton & Bulahdelah, likely to be affected. Flash flooding is also likely in these areas, along with continuing strong winds. Earlier today, a gust of 98km/h was recorded at Norah Head.

HEXHAM FIRES DOWNGRADED TO ‘ADVICE’

Two fires burning near Hexham west of Newcastle have been downgraded to ‘Advice’, after earlier reaching a ‘Watch And Act’ level warning. The first fire, which started near Sparke Street at Hexham, came just metres from a nursing home. A second fire burning on Ash Island, on the northern side of the Hunter River, is also at ‘Advice’ level. It’s burnt through almost 80 hectares, and is burning in the vicinity of a nearby coal storage area.

KNIGHTS FINE JACOB SAIFITI OVER PUB FIGHT

Newcastle Knights player Jacob Saifiti has been fined by the club, over last month’s fight outside a Hamilton pub. It’s understood the frontrower has been slugged $50,000 – with half of which being suspended, pending a number of conditions. Saifiti broke his leg in the incident. A 28-year-old man has been charged, and is due to face court next week. (VISION ONLY)

HAMILTON SOUTH UNIT GUTTED BY FIRE

Police spent Friday morning examining a unit at Hamilton South, gutted by an overnight fire. The unoccupied property on Neill Terrace went up in flames at around a quarter to nine. It took fire crews just over an hour to extinguish the blaze – a neighbouring property suffered smoke damage. The cause of the fire is being investigated. (VISION ONLY)
