REGIONAL CRICKET FINALS

Port Macquarie’s St Josephs High School held off a fervent attack from St Pauls to claim victory in today’s All Schools regional cricket final. Batsman Sam Tinsey helped St Joeys to a total of 192. In reply, St Pauls fell short by 58 runs, Sam Bailey was the main destroyer taking three for 28 off seven overs. In the girls final Westport High held off a determined St Pauls, thanks largely to co-captain Melissa Norup who starred with both the bat and ball. PHILLIP HUGHES TOPS 1000 RUNS IN A CALENDAR YEAR

20-year-old Macksville cricket star Phillip Hughes has entered the record books as the youngest player to reach 1000 first class runs in one calendar year. Hughes passed the milestone in the Sheffield Shield clash against Tasmania earlier this week when he scored 108 runs in his second innings. Hughes, who scored 93 in the first innings, scored 58 per cent of the New South Wales total. The young star will visit Coffs Harbour next week where he’ll conduct a batting clinic for talented juniors.
