THE CLASSIC RETURNS TO NAMBUCCA’S FABLED ISLAND GOLF COURSE

  120 keen golfers from Queensland to Victoria will tee off at this weekend’s Island Classic at Nambucca Heads. The three-day event for men and women begins Friday with the deciding rounds to be played Saturday and Sunday. The town’s iconic Island golf course ran into financial trouble a few years ago, but organisers say the event is helping it to recover. (“We’ve been pretty lucky that since I’ve been here for the last 9 months, we’ve had quite a few state events so this is just another follow-on just to keep the ball rolling”)

BREAKERS BEAT SAINTS IN NORTH COAST AFL MAJOR SEMI

The Coffs Harbour Breakers have booked a place in the North Coast Grand Final after a thrilling 12-point win over the Sawtell Toormina Saints. The Breakers kicked the first goal of the final quarter to open up what appeared to be an unnasailable lead. But the Saints rallied, kicking three in a row to get out in front. The turning point came with 10 minutes left, when 17-year-old Shayden Close kicked a brilliant goal from the boundary.
