POLICE RAID HOMES LINKED TO OUTLAW MOTORCYCLE GANGS

Police have seized cash, a rifle scope and a small amount of drugs, following a raid on the home of an associate of the Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang in northern NSW. Strike Force Walenore was formed to target bikie gangs, following recent acts of violence which are believed to be related to tensions between rival clubs. This week police searched for firearms, firearm parts and ammunition at two properties. They seized a rifle scope, a laser pointer, more than $6000 cash and cannabis from one at Commissioners Creek on Monday. A search was also conducted at the home of a member of the Lone Wolf Outlaw Motorcycle Gang at Terranora yesterday, where a 39-year-old man was issued a warning for consorting. MAN CHARGED FOLLOWING STAND-OFF ON YACHT

A man will face court today, following a 16-hour stand-off on a yacht at Lake Macquarie. The stand-off began around 10:30 yesterday morning, when officers tried to speak with a man on yacht, which was moored around 200-metres offshore at Carey Bay. Police allege he was armed with a knife, before setting fire to the back of the boat. It’s also alleged he became aggressive and attempted to fire flares at officers. The man was arrested just after three o’clock this morning, after he jumped in the water and swam to shore. He’s been charged with a string of offences and will face Newcastle Local Court today.

TRIBUTES FOR TENNIS CHAMPION PETER DOOHAN

Tributes are flowing for Australian tennis ace Peter Doohan, who’s lost his battle with motor neurone disease at the age of 56. Doohan, from Newcastle, famously took down two-time Wimbledon champion Boris Becker in 1987. “A moment which rocked the tennis world and changed forever the life of Newcastle battler, Peter Doohan.” It earned him the title of “Becker Wrecker” – something not lost on the German great, who’s taken to Twitter saying “RIP mate, you were the better player”. Doohan reached a career high ranking of 42 in singles and 15 in doubles and was unbeaten in Davis Cup representation. “Two of the things all Australian tennis players think about is Wimbledon and Davis Cup.
