UPSET AT ROSEBOWL TENNIS COMP

One of the Gold Coast’s largest pro tennis competitions saw a big upset this weekend. While Australian Open junior semi-finalist Kimberly Birrell won the women’s Rosebowl title, the mens saw the country’s 11th-ranked player beaten by junior Mitchell Robins – the competition’s second seed.

SIMMONS READY TO BALL

Ben Simmons is hopeful of being part of the Boomers squad, for next year’s Rio Olympics despite making himself unavailable this year to focus on college. Simmons took part in his first media session on Australian soil this morning, before heading north to Newcastle tomorrow. LSU takes on the Newcastle All Stars tomorrow night.

BANTING TO MISS TAHITI EVENT

Port Macquarie surfer Matt Banting has had to withdraw from another World Surf League event care of an ongoing knee injury. Banting will miss the Tahiti leg of the competition, after having to pull out of last month’s event at Jeffreys Bay. He injured his knee while free surfing prior to the J-Bay event. “Because it’s bruised bone you never know how bad it is … it was hurting pretty bad and once it got cold it swelled up and we knew something happened for sure,” Banting said in a WSL statement. Byron Bay’s Garrett Parkes will replace him in the event.
