THIRD TEEN CHARGED AFTER ALLEGED ONE-PUNCH ATTACK

A third teenager has been charged over an alleged one-punch attack on the Gold Coast that has left a 21-year-old man in hospital. Thomas Dover was walking on Ferny Avenue at Surfers Paradise with a friend around 2am on Wednesday when he was confronted by a group of youths. Police allege there was an argument that led to some of the teens assaulting the man, who was punched in the back of the head, causing him to fall and hit his head on the footpath.\ He has been in an induced coma in hospital since the attack. Police today charged a 15-year-old boy from Loganlea with grievous bodily harm over the attack. AUSTRALIA WARMER THAN AVERAGE IN 2016

Australia was warmer than average in 2016, with a national mean temperature 0.87 °C above average, and it was the fourth-warmest year on record, according to the Bureau of Meteorology’s Annual Climate Statement.   The country clocked its fourth-warmest year on record in 2016, which was curiously paired with above-average rainfalls. “Normally, with that amount of rainfall, you’d expect it to be a reasonably cool year but it’s come out as one of the warmest on record,” climate scientist Karl Braganza said. “Part of that is the influence of global warming in the oceans and in the atmosphere.” Another major contributor to Australia’s climate in 2016 was a very strong El Nino, with significantly warmer sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean feeding moisture over the continent, the bureau said. TWO TEENS QUESTIONED OVER GOLD COAST ASSAULT

Two teenagers are being questioned by police after a serious assault on the Gold Coast early this morning. At about 2am, a 21-year-old man was punched in the back of the head on Ferny Avenue in Surfers Paradise. The punch caused him to fall to the ground and hit his head on the pavement. He was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with serious head injuries. Two boys, aged 16 and 15, are assisting police with their enquiries.

GOLD COAST BEACHES TARGETED BY THIEVES

Queensland beachgoers are being urged to secure their keys and valuables this summer after a number of car thefts across the state’s beaches. Figures released by the RACQ on Tuesday show the Gold Coast’s Burleigh Beach was the state’s theft hotspot, with as many as 25 reported thefts in the past three years. In numerous cases, opportunistic thieves had pocketed keys from unprotected belongings on the beach, then scoured the carpark while pressing the unlock button before making away with a vehicle. Cars had also been stolen after keys were left under the tyre of the vehicle. Popular Sunshine Coast family beach Mooloolaba was the state’s second biggest hotspot with 21 thefts since the start of 2014, while Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast had each had 16 incidents. GOLD COAST MAN GRANTED BAIL FOLLOWING ASSAULT ON WOMAN

A Surfers Paradise man has been granted bail after allegedly punching a woman in the face repeatedly during an attack in August last year. Police allege the assault occurred when the woman was given a lift to a home at Coorparoo, in Brisbane’s south. The assault left the woman requiring eye surgery and a metal plate insert. 27-year-old Nicolas Bechar was charged with two counts of grievous bodily harm. He was granted bail today on the condition he make no contact with the woman and two others. In another incident, Mr Bechar was charged last year after he allegedly pulled out a replica firearm at a Brisbane nightclub in October. Both matters will return to court later this month.

POLICE SEARCH FOR MISSING BRISBANE MAN LAST SEEN ON THE GOLD COAST

Police are appealing to the public to help locate a missing Queensland man who was last seen on the Gold Coast. 18-year-old Jake Zamparutti went missing from Nundah in Brisbane on October 14, but he was seen at Maudsland on the Gold Coast on November 17. It’s believed Jake lives an itinerant lifestyle. Jake is described as Caucasian, approximately 180cms tall with a solid build, and short brown hair and brown eyes.

ONE DEAD AFTER SUSPECTED DRUG OVERDOSE AT BUSH RAVE

A man has died and another two are in a serious condition after suspected drug overdoses at a party on the Queensland-NSW border. The Ubunye festival on Hardgrave Road at Mount Lindesay is believed to have attracted an estimated 500 revellers on New Year’s Day. Emergency services were called to the property around 10.20am after several people became ill. One man was in a critical condition when paramedics arrived, and despite efforts to assist him, the patient went into cardiac arrest and died at the scene. Two other men came forward with symptoms and also went into cardiac arrest. Both were airlifted to hospital in a critical condition. Police are now waiting to interview the event’s organisers.

MAN ALLEGEDLY RETURNS POSITIVE BREATH TEST WITH SON IN THE VEHICLE

A driver allegedly returned a breath test six times the legal alcohol limit on the Gold Coast overnight. As part of the Christmas road safety campaign in Queensland, police intercepted a 44-year-old Labrador man at Witherin, who allegedly provided a reading of 0.3. Police say the man’s adolescent son was a front seat passenger. As officers drove the boy home, the man allegedly exited the police vehicle and became abusive. He’s been issued with a court appearance notice.

POLICE SEEK PUBLIC ASSISTANCE OVER VIOLENT GOLD COAST ROBBERY

Police have released CCTV images of a man they are hoping will be able to assist them in relation to a violent robbery on the Gold Coast earlier this year. Around 6:20pm on November 30, on a man entered a convenience store on Aubrey Street in Surfers Paradise. After asking for cigarettes, the man tried to leave the store without paying, before he struck a male staff member in the face when he attempted to intervene. The 26-year-old staff member suffered bruising to his face. The man is described as Caucasian in appearance, aged in his early 40s, balding with dark hair.

19-YEAR-OLD WANTED OVER ALLEGED GOLD COAST HOLD-UP

Police have released an image of a man they want to speak to in relation to an armed robbery on the Gold Coast just before Christmas. Police allege a man produced a firearm and demanded cash from a 19-year-old male resident at a Rio Vista Boulevard unit at Broadbeach Waters on December 23. The man fled with a sum of money following the hold-up. Police believe 19-year-old Mandal Francis Sellick might have information that can assist them with their investigation. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is urged to contact police immediately.
