GAV’S WEATHER: STRONG CHANGE ON THE WAY

Expect weather warnings a plenty over the next 24-hours, as a strong front makes its way up the coast. As it collides with warm air we’ll likely see severe storms across north east New South Wales and the south east corner of Queensland. The system will move through the Hunter at around 3am, reaching the Far North Coast by around 10pm. Temperatures will drop as the front passes, with coastal showers set to continue for a few days.

KATIE STENGEL REJOINS JETS W-LEAGUE SIDE

With only weeks remaining till the start of the W-League season, the Newcastle Jets have confirmed the signing of another key player. Katie Stengel rejoining the squad, after a strong season in the NWSL, scoring six goals in 23 matches for the Utah Royals. The 26-year-old led the Jets attack last year, her 13 goals in 10 games helping the side to a spot in the semi-finals. It will be the American attacker’s third season down-under. MAN FACES COURT OVER WOLLONGONG MURDER

A 29-year-old man has faced court in Maitland this morning, charged over the death of a mother near Wollongong. The body of 39-year-old Kristie Powell was found at her Bellambi home on Friday, her five-month-old son found unharmed in the house. The man was arrested yesterday near Maitland railway station. He was refused bail and is due back in court next week.

WEAPONS SEIZED IN HUNTER VALLEY SEARCH

A 46-year-old woman has been charged with a number of weapons related offences in the Hunter Valley. Officers raided a home on Scott Street at Scone late yesterday afternoon, seizing two replica pistols as well as an electronic stun device disguised as a set of knuckledusters. Two further sets of knuckledusters as well as cannabis were also discovered. The woman was charged with 13 offences, and will face court later today.

PHARMACY HELD UP AT SOUTH GRAFTON

A man armed with a knife has held up a pharmacy at South Grafton. Police have been told the man entered the business on Armidale Road shortly before 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon, threatening two staff members. He made of with a quantity of cash, Methadone and Fentanyl patches, and was last seen in an adjacent arcade. No one was injured in the incident, with the public being warned not to purchase any stolen prescription medication.

SERIOUS TRUCK CRASH NEAR KARUAH

Emergency services remain on the scene of a serious truck crash near Karuah north of Newcastle. A contra-flow is in place for both directions on the Pacific Highway, with delays in both directions. For the latest traffic information visit www.livetraffic.com The accident between two trucks happened at around 3 o’clock this morning just south of the southern Tarean Road interchange. One driver was trapped in his wrecked cabin for some time. He was flown to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital suffering serious head injuries.

JRPP DEFERS DECISION ON CONTROVERSIAL WEST BYRON DEVELOPMENT

A decision on a controversial development at West Byron has been deferred, pending further discussions with council and the applicant. The $40 million residential subdivision proposed by the West Byron Landowners Group went before the Joint Regional Planning Panel at Mullumbimby this afternoon. But Northern JRPP chairman Garry West said late information from the applicant meant a decision couldn’t be made today. The matter may yet end up before the Land and Environment Court. (VISION ONLY)

MAN CHARGED OVER SERIOUS CRASH AT LAKE MACQUARIE

A 46-year-old Bonnells Bay man is now facing multiple driving charges, following a serious crash at Myuna Bay in April. A Holden Commodore collided head-on with a Mitsubishi wagon on Wangi Road, leaving a 43-year-old woman and her 12-year-old passenger with hip, leg and internal injuries. The 46-year-old man is due to face Toronto Local Court in December. (VISION ONLY)
