SINKHOLE OPENS UP NEAR CALLAGHAN COLLEGE

A sinkhole has opened up near Callaghan College at Wallsend. A Newcastle City Council spokesperson says the hole was first reported early this morning. It’s believed mine subsidence caused the 1m x 1m hole to emerge, but it’s deeper underneath. A cement truck has arrived to fill a sinkhole which opened this morning at Wallsend, near Callaghan College. MAN ACCUSED IN ADAMSTOWN HEIGHTS INCIDENT NAMED

UPDATE: NBN Reporter Emma Murphy was in court this morning, the full report can be found here ***************************************************************** A Newcastle magistrate has revoked a non-publication order, on the name of the man accused of abducting and sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl in Newcastle last week. Police allege Brett David Hill kidnapped and sexually assaulted a young school girl during a five-hour ordeal at Adamstown Heights, last Tuesday. Police say they have preliminary DNA results in the case, and one other person has come forward with allegations towards Hill. The accused faced Newcastle Local Court this morning, he will reappear in August. MULTIPLE CHARGES FOR CENTRAL COAST PAIR

Two people have been charged with a number of offences, following two alleged incidents on the Central Coast in April this year. Police allege that around 2.45am on Saturday April 21, a 31-year-old man broke into a house on Kincumber Street, Kincumber and assaulted and stabbed a man inside, before stealing a vehicle on the property. On Monday April 23, two men, aged 31 and 34, and a 27-year-old woman allegedly threatened a woman with a knife, and tried to force her to sign over the registration of a vehicle. She refused, and the 34-year-old allegedly stole the vehicle’s keys and a mobile phone, also slashing the car’s tyres. The 31-year-old man allegedly stole the woman’s 10-week-old dog. BODY OF MISSING MAN IN RICHMOND RIVER FOUND

The body of a 45-year-old man reported missing in the Richmond River, south of Ballina, has been found this morning. A large-scale search has been underway since Tuesday night, with emergency services responding to reports a man had fallen into the river and hadn’t been seen since. His body was discovered this morning around 10am. Police are now trying to piece together his movements prior to his death. They say he may have been drunk, and was allegedly assaulted, moments before disappearing. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

WAUCHOPE BIKE RIDER KILLED NEAR PORT MACQUARIE

A 50-year-old King Creek cyclist has died, during his morning ride near Port Macquarie. The incident occurred around 6am, when the man was riding his push-bike northbound on the Oxley Highway. A semi-trailer, being driven by a 42-year-old Port Macquarie man, was also travelling on the Oxley Highway, when the two collided. The cyclist was taken to Port Macquarie Base Hospital, where he later died. The driver was also taken to hospital for mandatory tests.

MAN PRESENTS WITH GUNSHOT WOUNDS IN WARATAH

A 24-year-old man is recovering in hospital, after presenting to a Newcastle hospital with gunshot wounds overnight. Around 11pm, a man was dropped at the Mater Hospital in Waratah, suffering gunshot wounds to his hand and shoulder. His injuries are not considered life-threatening. Police are yet to speak to the man due to his medical state. At the same time, police were called to the intersection of Acacia Avenue and Allowah Street, Waratah West, after reports of gun shots. A crime scene was established, with detectives investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

GLASS SAND TO HELP REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE!

The future of recycling may be happening right now at Lake Macquarie. The council is using tonnes of crushed glass for road infrastructure, and it’s hoping its neighbours follow suit. CONTAINER CLEAN-UP LATEST – AT LEAST 80% REMOVED

Authorities believe they’re winning the battle against debris from a container spill off Newcastle – estimating at least 80% has been cleared. RMS Executive Director Angus Mitchell says the rubbish came from up to 14 containers. Most of the 83 lost are thought to be on the seabed. “Once we’ve mapped where they are, well then we’ve got some questions to answer as to what next, and whether salvage is feasible and possible in the instances.” Around 1/3 of debris cleared is being kept at a facility in Newcastle.
