JBS SCONE EMPLOYEES STRIKE A DEAL

Meat workers at Scone’s biggest employer have accepted a new agreement, after a month of negotiations. In early July, more than 70 meat workers walked off the job at JBS Scone, protesting compulsory weekend work. Since the strike action, employees have now agreed to a new offer, including rostered days off for employees on a five-day roster, a pay rise of up to 13 per cent over four years, and a $300 bonus once the deal is signed. SYDNEY ARTIST TAKES HOME KILGOUR PRIZE

A Sydney artist has taken home Newcastle’s Kilgour Prize, thanks to this intricate self-portrait called ‘Within the Studio’. Natasha Walsh painted the small artwork on a slab of marble, taking home the $50,000 prize. Close to 400 artworks were submitted this year, with five Hunter artists making the final cut. The exhibition will be on display at Newcastle Art Gallery until October 21. (VISION ONLY)

FINKS BIKIE ARRESTED ON MID NORTH COAST

A high-ranking member of the Finks outlaw motorcycle gang (OMCG) has been charged, following a search warrant on the Mid North Coast yesterday. Strike Force Addax was established in January to target OMCG activity on the Mid North Coast. Around 11.30am yesterday, investigators, with the assistance of Raptor North, executed a search at a Thrumster home. During the search, police located and seized methylamphetamine, cash, a push dagger, and a Rolex watch, suspected to be stolen or otherwise unlawfully obtained. All items were secured for forensic analysis. A 39-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were both arrested and taken to Port Macquarie Police Station. The man was charged with a string of offences, including reckless greivous bodily harm, attempted kidnap and supply prohibited drug – commercial quantity. TRUCK DRIVER CAUGHT ALLEGEDLY OVER LIMIT AND ON PHONE

A 61-year-old truck driver has been charged with several offences, after being caught allegedly over the limit, and using his mobile phone behind the wheel along The Esplanade at Speers Point this morning. Just before 8am, Highway Patrol officers noticed a man driving a tipper truck and dog trailer, while using a mobile phone and not wearing a seatbelt. Officers stopped the vehicle and spoke to the man, who then underwent a roadside breath test, which allegedly returned a reading of 0.055. He was issued penalty notices for mobile phone and seatbelt offences, fined $674 and lost seven demerit points. He will face low range PCA charges in Toronto Local Court on August 28.

MAN CHARGED OVER GLENREAGH CHURCH FIRE

An 18-year-old man has been charged, following a fire which destroyed the historic St Paul’s Catholic Church near Coffs Harbour earlier this year. Just before 5am, May 27, emergency services responded to a church fire at Glenreagh. The blaze was quickly extinguished, but the entire building was gutted. Detectives set up Operation Dwight to investigate the fire. Following inquiries, around 10am yesterday, police executed a search warrant at a Kungala home, and seized several items believed to be stolen. A short time later, officers arrested an 18-year-old man on Taloumbi Road, Coffs Harbour. He was taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station and charged with damage property by fire and break and enter house etc destroy property. He was granted conditional bail to appear at a Children’s Court on September 13.

DRUGS, REPLICA PISTOLS SEIZED IN CENTRAL COAST SEARCH

Two people have been arrested, after police allegedly seized drugs, replica pistols and a cache of prohibited weapons during a search warrant on the Central Coast. Around 7am yesterday, officers searched a home on Gilda Drive, Narara, north of Gosford. During the search, police located an unregistered air rifle, four replica pistols, a replica uzi sub machine gun and prohibited weapons including flick knives and knuckle dusters. A hydroponic cannabis setup was also found. A man and a woman, both aged 45, were arrested at the home and taken to Gosford Police Station. The man was charged with various offences, and granted conditional bail to appear at Gosford Local Court on August 21. The woman was released pending further inquiries.

ANOTHER FATAL CRASH ON THE M1 MOTORWAY

A 72-year-old man has died, in a head-on collision on the M1 at Warnervale this morning. Around 4.30am, emergency services were called to the southbound lanes of the M1, near the Sparks Road off ramp. It’s believed a driver was travelling in the wrong direction on the southern exit ramp of the motorway, when a northbound sedan and a southbound utility collided. The driver of the sedan died at the scene. The 26-year-old male occupant of the utility was treated at the scene and taken to Gosford Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and underwent mandatory testing. Both vehicles have been removed for further mechanical examination. All southbound lanes have now re-opened.

MAN INJURED AS CAR CRASHES INTO CENTRAL COAST SHOP

A man has been flown to John Hunter Hospital with serious lower leg injuries, after a car smashed through a shop window on the Central Coast. Just after 9.30am, emergency services were called to Ray White Real Estate at Bateau Bay. A 59-year-old man, who’s believed to have been working inside at the time, was trapped under the vehicle for around 30 minutes. The driver, a woman in her 70s, was freed from the vehicle. Crews are working to stabilise the building. MORE TO COME.
