THE HUNTER GEARS UP FOR AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONS

There’s a jam-packed schedule for Australia Day across the Hunter. Newcastle Council will hold a family fun day at the foreshore, before fireworks at 8:30. While the Harbour Swim will have a record number of entrants. The Choirboys and fireworks will rock Speers Point Park. Maitland Council will host a morning barbecue, before its citizenship ceremony. And a RAAF flyover and vintage car parade will take place at Port Stephens. (VISION ONLY)

FORMER RSL PRESIDENT ACCUSED OF FRAUD

A former RSL NSW State President has been charged with fraud, following an investigation by the Financial Crimes Squad. In December 2016, detectives established Strike Force Whitbread to investigate reports of the misappropriation of funds within the NSW RSL. Detectives obtained large volumes of documentation, which have undergone forensic accounting analysis. Following extensive inquiries, police met with a 70-year-old man at Armidale Police Station on Wednesday. He was charged by way of a Future Court Attendance Notice for two counts of dishonestly obtain a financial advantage or cause disadvantage by deception. He’s due to face a Sydney court in March.

TWO BODIES FOUND IN MACLEAY RIVER CAR SEARCH

UPDATE 4:50PM: Police have just confirmed two bodies have been removed from a vehicle submerged in the Macleay River – the bodies of an adult male and an adult female. We’ll have the latest details tonight at 6pm. EARLIER: Police are focusing on a four-metre section of the Macleay River, where they believe the car is submerged. Crews are awaiting police divers to arrive from Sydney, with officers describing the conditions as murky. It’s still unknown whether any persons were in the vehicle. A rescue operation is underway on the NSW Mid North Coast, after a car plunged into the Macleay River this morning. Police have been told the vehicle was travelling on Croads Esplanade, Smithtown, when it left the road and ended up in the water shortly after 11am. It’s unknown how many people were in the vehicle.
