HUNTER NOMINEES SWEEP THE NSW AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR LIST

There’s a Hunter dominated field in line for this year’s NSW Australian of the Year title. Of the four nominees, three are Newcastle-based. Paralympian Kurt Fearnley caps off a stellar year with a nomination – after being named an Officer of the Order of Australia back in June, and officially retiring from competing for Australia after the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Also nominated, former Newcastle Knights player turned brain cancer campaigner Mark Hughes. He co-created the Mark Hughes Foundation back in 2014, and has since partnered with organisations such as the NRL to bring brain cancer research front and centre across Australia. And the Newcastle Herald’s Walkley winning journalist Joanne McCarthy has also been nominated. TELARAH BLAZE DESTROYS FAMILY HOME

A house at Telarah has been gutted by an overnight blaze. Firefighters raced to the Capper Street property at around 9:30pm. Flames ripped through the building, causing the roof to collapse. It took crews from three stations about an hour to extinguish the blaze. Thankfully, no one was injured. (VISION ONLY)

ONE SONG – HARMONISED ACROSS THE COUNTRY

Students across the Hunter joined a national sing-a-long today, with more than half-a-million pupils singing the same song, at the same time. The region’s largest contingent harmonised at Lambton High. “Through working together as communities as countries, you know, you can unite and make change and a positive difference in life.” says Lambton High’s Creative and Performing Arts Head Teacher, Dan Wilson. The song – written for students, by students – is part of the ‘Music Count Us In’ project… designed to showcase the power of music. (AUDIO IN PARTS)

MAN CHARGED AS DRUGS AND CASH SEIZED ON MID NORTH COAST

A 45-year-old man has been charged over allegedly supplying drugs on the mid north coast. Around 4.30pm on Tuesday, police executed a search warrant at an Albert Street property in South Kempsey. Officers seized several items, including what’s believed to be heroin, cash, a homemade electric stun device, and stolen property. He’s been charged with several offences, and refused bail to appear at Port Macquarie Local Court today.

MAN SUFFERS MULTIPLE INJURIES IN HUNTER VALLEY ROLLOVER

MAYFIELD MOTORCYCLIST WITH SERIOUS HEAD INJURIES AFTER CRASH

A motorcycle rider in his 50s has been taken to John Hunter Hospital with serious head injuries, after a two-vehicle accident at Mayfield. Around 9.30am, emergency crews were called to the intersection of Church Street and Maitland Road, following reports a motorcycle and a car had collided. The male driver of the vehicle was uninjured and is assisting police. Anyone with dashcam vision is urged to come forward.
