NEW DRUG ACTION TEAMS ANNOUNCED FOR REGION

Five new drug action teams have been announced for the New England and North West to tackle drug and alcohol use at a grassroots level. The teams will be based in Inverell, Armidale, Tenterfield, Moree and Narrabri and will work with community organisations and the New South Wales Police force to deliver prevention programs. Each drug action team has received $10, 000 in federal government funding to develop an action plan unique to each community. (VISION ONLY)

FREE DROUGHT WORKSHOP TO BE HELD IN SOMERTON

With winter just days away, the region’s farmers are still feeling the pinch of a long, dry summer. Tomorrow night a free drought management workshop will be held at the Somerton Hotel in a bid to help producers manage skyrocketing feed prices and prepare for the months ahead. The forum will see agricultural consultants on hand to give specialised advice on stock management and feeding, as well as drought planning. The information session will get underway at 6.30pm. PLANNING WELL UNDERWAY FOR NEW ASTRONOMY CENTRE

While Tamworth’s Astronomy Club is preparing to host 200 people at tonight’s stargazing world record attempt, members say planning is well-underway for a new astronomy and science centre. Last month the state government announced $1.8-million to build a new facility at the Victoria Park site, which would include a museum, observatory and education centre. “The project now is being finalised to actually start commencing the tender process very, very, shortly.” It’s hoped the new centre will benefit local school students, as well as boost tourism. TAMWORTH GYMNASTS MEDAL AT AUSSIE CHAMPS

Two Tamworth gymnasts have found success at the Australian Championships in Victoria. Paige Seaton was selected for the New South Wales level seven team while Maisie Wilde was a late inclusion after another team member was ruled out through injury. Both gymnasts competed in all four artistic events, helping the New South Wales team secure a bronze medal. (VISION ONLY)

COUNTRY MINDED PARTY IS NO MORE

The Country Minded Party is no more, after being officially deregistered by the Australian Electoral Commission. The local political group was established in 20-14, with a focus on rural and agricultural issues. David Mailler was the party’s candidate in the 20-16 election – his brother Peter running as the by-election nominee. The party was deregistered earlier this month after its membership fell below the required benchmark of 500 people. (VISION ONLY)
