TRUCK ROLLS OVER ON MOTORWAY ON-RAMP

Emergency crews found themselves with a big clean up job, after a truck rolled while negotiating an on-ramp at Somersby this morning. The ramp connecting Wisemans Ferry Road to the northbound M1 Motorway had to be closed to traffic twice as debris was cleared. No one was injured. (VISION ONLY)

POLICE TREATING GLENREAGH CHURCH FIRE AS SUSPICIOUS

Police have confirmed they are treating a fire which destroyed an historic church at Glenreagh as suspicious. The blaze broke out in St Pauls Catholic Church at around 4.30am yesterday, and quickly engulfed the weatherboard building. Despite the best efforts of local firefighters, it couldn’t be saved. Anyone with information is being urged to contact Coffs Harbour Police.

TWO CHARGES DROPPED AGAINST COURTNEY MATTHEWS

Two charges have been dropped against the babysitter who was driving a car when it crashed near Casino in the state’s north, killing the four-year-old daughter of a local police officer. Magistrate Michael Dakin agreed with the defence that the evidence presented would not show, to a jury, that Courtney Matthews’ driving was dangerous when her Mazda 323 crossed onto the wrong side of the road. Four-year-old Elle Underhill died in the crash, two other children in the car survived. Her father, Sergeant Steve Underhill, was one of the first officers to arrive at the scene. Matthews no longer faces charges of dangerous driving occasioning death and dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm. She still faces one count of negligent driving occasioning death and one of negligent driving occasioning bodily harm.

MAN DIES RESCUING TWO CHILDREN AT MID NORTH BEACH

A man has drowned while attempting to help two children in distress at a beach north of Coffs Harbour. Police say two girls got into difficulty at Wooli Beach shortly after 1pm, the man, aged in his 60s, went to their aid. Surf Rescue pulled the children to safety, while the man was taken from the water unresponsive. CPR was performed, but he died at the scene.

POLICE REVIEWING CAMERA FOOTAGE OF MEREWETHER PUB FIGHT

Police say they’re yet to establish the cause of a series of brawls involving around 20 people outside the Prince of Wales hotel in the Newcastle suburb of Merewether early on Saturday evening. There are reports two groups arrived at the licensed venue around 5.30pm, when an altercation broke out on the footpath. At least two were injured and were treated at the scene by paramedics for cuts and abrasions. While no arrests have been made at this stage, officers have reviewed video footage from the pub’s CCTV and from witnesses’ mobile phones. They say they have identified a number of the people involved and intend to interview in coming days. Officers are also working to identify others who were present. Local police have described the incident as cowardly.

INDUSTRIAL FIRE IN LAMBTON BEING TREATED AS SUSPICIOUS

Witnesses say they saw items and a bush on fire in a laneway at the back of Air View Aluminium, a light industrial business operating in the Newcastle suburb of Lambton. Immediately calling 000, they say it took less than 10 minutes for the fire to completely take hold of the storage building neighbouring the main offices. Firefighters responded quickly, a number of crews called away from Station Open days to battle the flames. The blaze attracting a big crowd of onlookers. It’s not yet known what caused the fire, however at this stage it is being treated as suspicious.
