FOUR GREAT WHITES TAGGED ON NORTH COAST

Four great white sharks have now been tagged, as part of a monitoring program on the North Coast. The Department of Primary Industries has until the end of the year to gather as much data on the predators as possible. It comes after a spate of recent attacks and sightings, which has put pressure on the government to put in place appropriate shark mitigation measures.

CALLS FOR VACCINATION AFTER HENDRA VIRUS DEATH ON NORTH COAST

Horse owners are being urged to vaccinate their animals after a Lismore gelding was euthanised on Thursday, having contracted the Hendra virus “It would have been avoidable, certainly vaccination is the best way to avoid Hendra, there are other ways of reducing the risk but vaccination remains the primary means of preventing the disease” said vetinarian, Nick Jones. Other precautions include covering feed and water troughs near trees where bats are known to live. It’s the second case of Hendra virus on the North Coast this year.
