NEWCASTLE CHINA FESTIVAL ENTERTAINS

Hamilton’s Beaumont Street was transformed today for the annual Newcastle Chinese Festival. It was all about bringing the community together to celebrate traditional and contemporary Chinese culture, through dance, food and art. “Really working with the community here in particular the Hamilton Business Council and the busiensses, it’s very important that we’re a part of the community we belong too.” The festival is organised by the Confucius Institute, at the University of Newcastle.

MAN DEAD AFTER BEING CRUSHED BY HORSE

A 58-year-old man has died after being crushed by a horse at Merriwa Showground yesterday. He was competing in a campdraft when his horse tripped over and fell on him, causing him to suffer serious head injuries. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

MAN ARRESTED AT GUNPOINT

A man has been arrested at gunpoint, after he allegedly threatened three people with a knife in Newcastle. Just after 12:30am, two men and a woman were walking along Maitland Road at Wickham, when they were allegedly threatened by a 48-year-old. He’s been charged with multiple offences.

TENDERS OPEN FOR NORTHERN BREAKWALL

Construction is set to begin early next year on upgrading Coffs Harbour’s northern breakwall. The state government is calling for tenders for the $15.12 million project. The work will include crest improvements and re-armouring between the beach and Muttonbird Island. Once complete, the upgrade will make the breakwall safer for users and ensure boats docked in the marina aren’t damaged. Expressions of interest close on October 15.
