LUCKY ESCAPE FOR COFFS HARBOUR FISHERMAN

A 49-year-old fisherman has had a lucky escape after his tinnie began to sink off the Coffs Harbour Marina. A bystander captured it on her phone, with police saying the man was heading east towards Muttonbird Island around 2.15 yesterday afternoon before something went wrong. “For an unknown reason the boat has dragged its anchor and ended up on the shore, a surf lifesaver attended a short time later and towed him off the shore.” The man was unharmed.

It’s crunch time for surf crews across the coast, with the finals of the North Coast Surf Boat Series kicking off tomorrow at Park Beach. Woolgoolga is currently leading the series and now has an added advantage, after a vital Coffs Harbour crew member jumped ship.

PIONEER PARK SAGA CONTINUES

More than 500 locals have signed a petition to save Coffs Harbour’s Pioneer Park. Council plans to build a road through the park, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion from planned works at the Harbour Drive and Gordon Street intersection. But it has attracted a number of complaints from Councillor Sally Townley, who claims the idea is based on flawed plans. Mayor Denise Knight has requested council supply a detailed briefing of the work before the matter is re-tabled to councillors. (VISION ONLY)

The Marine Fisheries Productivity Commission has been travelling across the Mid North Coast, meeting with locals to discuss better ways to keep the industry viable. A number of local organisations hope the talks will see the industry strengthen in the future.

FAKE MONEY REPORTED IN GRAFTON

Coffs-Clarence police are warning shopkeepers to be extra vigilant after a number of fake 50 and $100 notes were discovered in Grafton. Police say it’s likely that more have gone unreported across the region. Anyone with information should contact police.

71-YEAR-OLD MAN CHARGED OVER COFFS HARBOUR ASSAULT

A 71-year-old Dorrigo man has been charged over the indecent assault of a teenage boy in Coffs Harbour back in January. Police say a 14-year-old boy was in a public toilet at Saltwater Park on Harbour Drive, when the man allegedly entered the cubicle and assaulted him. Following information provided to Crime Stoppers, investigators arrested and charged the man yesterday. He was refused bail, and will appear at Coffs Harbour Local Court on April 12.
