Bureaucratic row rages as Premier says not my problem

Residents affected by the New Lambton landslip say they’re “devastated” by recent comments by the Premier.
Chris Minns said it’s the responsibility of council – which today hit back – claiming the government has taken a more compassionate approach to other natural disasters.

Full statement by City of Newcastle spokesperson:

City of Newcastle acknowledges the ongoing impact to residents in the area affected by the New Lambton landslip and the significant hardship this situation has caused.

As a council, our responsibility lies with public infrastructure such as roads, footpaths and stormwater systems.

We are not authorised to use public funds for works or repairs on private land, unless directed under specific laws or supported by state or federal disaster funding programs.

We will continue to advocate for the NSW Government to take an active role in the recovery process through the NSW Reconstruction Authority, which was created for the purpose of leading recovery efforts in collaboration with community and other recovery partners.

It remains unclear why the NSW Government has chosen not to lead this process given the landslip was the result of the east coast severe weather event in May, which was formally declared a natural disaster by the NSW and Federal Governments.

The NSW Government has taken a far more compassionate approach to flood affected homes on the Mid North Coast resulting from the same weather event.

We remain committed to working with the NSW Government and recovery agencies to ensure a coordinated, safe, and compassionate path forward for the community.
