‘It’s horrific for women across Australia’: Grieving mum welcomes appeal of murderer’s sentence

The mother of Mackenzie Anderson has welcomed a decision by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to appeal the sentence handed to her daughter’s killer.
Tyrone Thompson stabbed 21-year-old Ms Anderson at least 78 times with two knives at her Mayfield unit in March 2022, in what a Supreme Court Judge described as a “frenzied attack”.
The 25 year old was ultimately jailed for 22 years and six months, with a non-parole period of 15 years and six months.
The sentence earlier this month outraged Mackenzie’s mother who called for an appeal.
This morning, Tabitha Acret said was “very, very happy” with the decision but noted it was a “small step in a long journey.”
In a statement the ODPP says it “anticipates filing the appeal this morning.”
