Police target motorists driving under the influence

NSW Police have increased their presence on streets across the state, focusing on drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs following concerning road trauma trends last month.

Traffic & Highway Patrol officers commenced Operation RAID (Remove All Impaired Drivers) at 12.01am on Thursday May 8 and concluded at 11.59pm on Saturday May 10.

Incidents of note:

1. A 22-year-old driver was stopped on New England Highway, Deepwater around 7.30am on Friday May 9, due to the manner of driving.

The P-plater allegedly returned a positive result to a roadside breath test and was arrested and taken to Glen Innes Police Station.

He underwent a breath analysis and allegedly returned a reading on 0.128, he also allegedly tested positive to cannabis and methamphetamine during a secondary drug test.

He was charged with a number of offences with his license suspended, he will face court in July.

2. A 44-year-old man was stopped by police around 10:15pm on Friday May 9 on Chatham Road, Broadmeadow where checks on his license revealed he was disqualified from driving until 2059.

The man allegedly returned a positive result to an oral fluid test, with a subsequent search by police finding 96.26g of cannabis, 14.21g of methamphetamine, $1455 cash and a foldable knife inside the car.

The man was arrested and taken to Newcastle Police Station where he allegedly returned a positive result to methamphetamine and cannabis after a secondary oral fluid test.

He appeared in Parramatta Local Court where he was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court next month.

3. Around 1:40am on Saturday May 10, police were patrolling on Lang Street, Kurri Kurri, when they attempted to stop a vehicle, when he failed to do so, a pursuit was initiated.

A short time later, the car collided with a gutter and stopped. The driver, a 20-year-old man, was arrested and allegedly returned a positive roadside reading.

Police searched the car and allegedly located 320 capsules of MDMA, $1060 in cash and other substances in bags.

Police also allegedly located large knives and hatchets.

He was taken to Cessnock Police Station and charged.
