Teen charged after man’s hand cut off in brutal assault
An 18-year-old man has been charged after a man’s hand was cut off during an assault on the New South Wales Mid North Coast yesterday.
Police were called to a home on Toormina Place in Coffs Harbour around 6.45 am after reports a man’s hand was severed.
Paramedics then found a 59-year-old man at the scene with the gruesome injury.
He was treated at the scene before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Two women, aged 58 and 80, were also at the home at the time but were not injured.
Police said two men, one of whom is known to the victim, had assaulted him before fleeing the scene.
At about 10 pm last night, officers patrolling the streets in South Grafton spotted a vehicle without registration plates.
The driver failed to stop, sparking a police chase.
The chase ended when the vehicle got bogged on playing fields a short time later and an 18-year-old man was arrested.
A machete was allegedly found inside the vehicle when it was searched and had been sent away for further testing, NSW Police said.
The teenager was taken to Grafton Police Station where he was charged with a raft of charges including aggravated break and enter, grievous bodily harm and possessing a prohibited drug.
He was refused bail and is set to appear in Grafton Local Court today.
