ELECTIVE SURGERY CANCELLED AFTER HOSPITAL STAFF EXPOSED TO COVID-19

About half of the scheduled elective surgeries due to take place at Lismore Base Hospital today have been cancelled.

41 theatre staff are self-isolating and getting tested after coming into contact with a confirmed positive COVID-19 case over the weekend.

NSW Health confirmed the exposure did not occur in the hospital setting.

Northern NSW Local Health District Chief Executive, Wayne Jones, said affected patients have been contacted.

“In conjunction with our public health team, we are undertaking risk assessments and will provide advice to our staff in due course about when they can safely return to work,” Mr Jones said.

“We will monitor the situation in relation to any future impacts on upcoming surgical procedures this week.”

Emergency and urgent surgery is continuing.

Meanwhile, East Lismore Bowling Club has posted on Facebook alerting members and guests that one of their staff members has contracted COVID-19.

The club closed today for deep cleaning and other employees have been sent to get a test immediately.
