EP10 Rewind – Darks Ice Works
In the 1960’s, Newcastle locals could keep their cool, thanks to Darks Iceworks, located between the Newcastle branch train line and the busy bustling harbour.
NBN News visited the site that supplied ice for cool rooms and residents across the city.
This was industrial scale production, huge blocks of frozen water sliding from moulds, ready for collection.
During this time, efficient electrical based cooling was already replacing this process for commercial use.
But for now, locals could still get fresh ‘old school’ ice for fishing and camping trips using their trusty utes and Eskys.
Another way of life filmed by NBN News, now long lost in the rush of time and progress.
