NSW RECORDS 1331 NEW LOCAL COVID-19 CASES, WITH 30 IN THE HUNTER

New South Wales has recorded 1331 new local COVID-19 cases, along with six deaths, overnight.

The Hunter’s caseload remains high, recording 30 across the region today, with at least 16 of those who were in the community while infectious.

Sixteen are from Lake Macquarie, including four from West Wallsend, seven are from Newcastle, five are from Maitland and there was one case recorded in both Cessnock and Port Stephens.

Nineteen of the 30 cases are linked, five are mystery cases and six are still under investigation.

Of the district’s 256 active covid cases, 15 are in hospital and two are in intensive care.

Meanwhile, the Central Coast recorded 29 locally acquired cases – 23 of which were in the community while infectious.

Contact tracers have linked 19 of the cases, but are still investigating the other 12.

While there were no cases recorded on the North Coast, health authorities are worried the virus is circulating undetected after several positive sewage detections there.

“So, yesterday we detected fragments of the virus that causes covid in Byron Bay and Wardell on the North Coast,” said Director of Health Protection NSW Dr Jeremy McAnulty.

“This is important for identifying places we want people to really come forward for testing should they have even the mildest of symptoms.”

It comes as Glen Innes enters day-one of its seven-day snap lockdown, after a covid case was active in the community there for three days before being diagnosed.
