RECORD 1290 COVID CASES IN NSW WITH REGIONAL COMMUNITIES PUT ON “ALERT”

New South Wales has recorded a new daily high of 1290 local cases of COVID-19 and four more deaths.

Three cases are from the Hunter – two in Lake Macquarie and one from Cessnock – with the Whitebridge and Cessnock cases both infectious in the community.

The Central Coast’s six new cases were all infectious in the community.

Following the death of a man in Dubbo, NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro has urged all regional communities to be “alert”.

Nine of today’s new cases are from the Far West, including seven in Wilcannia and two in Broken Hill.

Mr Barilaro has pleaded with regional communities to come forward to get tested and vaccinated.

“So, again to those communities be alert of what is occurring and please come out and get tested,” he said.

There are also fresh calls for residents in Byron Bay to come forward for testing, with fragments of the virus detected there.

NSW Health says these detections are a concern as there are no known cases in the area.

Earlier today, getting the Pfizer vaccine became easier for all Australians with the eligibility expanded to include everyone aged 16-39 from today.

So far across the state, more than 6.8 million vaccines had been administered.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian has predicted that the number of people requiring hospitalisation in NSW will soon get worse.

“We anticipate that the worst month, the worst time for our intensive care unit, will be in October,” she said.

“We also know from the information we have, the accumulation of cases and the number unvaccinated, that October is likely to be our worst month in terms of pressure on the system and that is why we have gearing up for that and we have been nearly two years.”

Ms Berejiklian said the number of cases in the intensive care unit will depend on the state’s vaccination rate.

“Our hospital system is under pressure. Will we need to do things differently? Of course, we will,” she said.
