SNOW SEEKERS WARNED TO STAY HOME

Authorities have issued a strong warning to those considering visiting the Barrington Tops this week, ahead of forecast possible snow and strong winds.

Hunter Valley Police District Chief Inspector Guy Guiana says site-seeing is not a reasonable excuse to leave your home during lockdown.

“Operation Stay at Home is underway in every Police Area Command and Police District across the state, and police will not hesitate to take action against those who have a blatant disregard for the current Public Health Orders,” Ch Insp Guiana said.

“With strong winds, there is also potential for trees and branches to fall, posing a direct risk to visitors, and possibly blocking access into and out of the area.

“NSW Police may close roads at any time to ensure road safety. During extreme weather, the status of roads on Barrington Tops can change at short notice. People can become stuck in sub-zero temperatures.

“Hefty fines apply for breaching the current Public Health Orders, so on top of the physical hazards, now is NOT the time to be travelling for any reason not specifically allowed for in the Public Health Orders.

“Our message is simple: Stay at Home means just that – Stay at Home! Police will be out in high-visibility to ensure compliance with the Public Health Orders,” Ch Insp Guiana said.
