NEWCASTLE MAN DIES OF COVID AFTER CONTRACTING THE VIRUS AT EDGEWORTH AGED CARE

New South Wales has recorded 818 new COVID-19 cases overnight, with at least 42 infectious in the community.

Four of those cases are from the Hunter and Central Coast region.

There’s been another person test positive in Lake Macquarie, linked to the Boolaroo Costco cluster, who was in the community while infectious and one person in the Cessnock LGA at East Braxton, who was is isolation.

One of the Central Coast cases was also in isolation while infectious and another is under investigation.

Two men and a woman, all aged in their 80s, also died of COVID-19 overnight.

One is a Newcastle man who died at John Hunter Hospital after contracting the virus at Edgeworth’s Hawkins Masonic Village.

He had been given two doses of the vaccine, but had serious underlying health issues.

This is the second death linked to an outbreak at this aged care facility.

NSW administered a record 738,000 vaccinations last week, Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.

“We’re up to 5.9 million jabs in NSW,” she said.

“I’d set a target of six million by the end of the month and it looks like we’ll be at least a week ahead of schedule so I’m so pleased that everybody’s really heard the call, heard the messages, and is coming out to get vaccinated.”

Pfizer vaccination bookings will be open to Australians aged under 40 from next Monday.

At-risk children aged between 12 and 15, who are on the NDIS, will also become eligible next Wednesday.

Advice is expected from the ATAGI on vaccinations for children aged between 12 and 15 by the end of the week.
