RECORD SPIKE IN NSW DELTA OUTBREAK, AS THE HUNTER RECORDS 7 NEW CASES

New South Wales has recorded 830 new locally acquired coronavirus cases, surpassing yesterday’s record spike of 825.

Seven of those cases are in the Hunter New England area – three in Newcastle, two in Lake Macquarie and two in Cessnock.

All three Newcastle cases – two from Jesmond and one from Islington – were in the community while infectious.

Although no cases were recorded on the Central Coast overnight, NSW Health has recently detected fragments of the virus at the Bateau Bay sewage treatment plant, which services around 39,000 people.

“This detection is of particular concern as there are no known cases in the Bateau Bay area,” a NSW Health spokesperson said.

“Everyone in this area is urged to monitor for the onset of symptoms, and if they appear, to immediately be tested.”

Three people died from COVID-19, taking the total death toll from the current outbreak to 71.

Despite the soaring figures, NSW is administering vaccines at a faster rate than those ever seen in the UK or US.

NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard says he is impressed by the rate of vaccination in the state.

“I’m pleased, very pleased, the vaccination rate in New South Wales is now quite extraordinary,” Mr Hazzard said.

Nearly 59 per cent of people in NSW have had one dose of the vaccine, and nearly 30 per cent are fully vaccinated.

In the last week 750,000 doses of the vaccine have been administered, Mr Hazzard said.

But there are still fears numbers in NSW could soon surpass 1,000 COVID-19 cases per day after a huge spike in numbers this week.
