Lismore MP Janelle Saffin is calling for an independent inquiry into the management of Tenterfield Hospital.
It comes after council wrote to her with concerns that staff are under-resourced and overworked.
“Why can’t they have a doctor on staff or two? Why can’t they keep a doctor on staff? And when they do get a doctor, a doctor is on call 24/7. We cannot tolerate that,” she said.
NBN News understands as many as 18 nurses have resigned in recent years.
Ms Saffin says she’s written to Health Minister Brad Hazzard, and they’ll be discussing the matter in the coming weeks.
