A $3-million proposal to renovate the Beach Hotel has been knocked back by Newcastle Council, after more than 100 Merewether residents objected to it, citing noise and privacy concerns.
The plan would have seen the venue’s ground floor trade beyond midnight.
“To change the trading hours in a residential location – not in the city centre – to 3am is a significant change.” – Cr. Nuatali Nelmes, Newcastle Lord Mayor.
The unanimous vote sends hotelier Andrew Lazarus back to the drawing board.
