HUNDREDS ATTEND PEP-11 PROTEST AT BYRON BAY

More than a thousand people have attended a paddle out in Byron Bay today – opposing PEP11 and offshore oil and gas exploration.

In its largest event yet, Surfrider Foundation praised the community for turning out in force.

“This stop PEP11 campaign is growing by the minute with coastal communities outraged the minute they hear about what is proposed. We need to stop this right now and today is going to be a show of true people power,” Damien Cole said.

Federal resources minister, Keith Pitt, is reviewing the PEP11 permit which covers almost 5000 square kilometres off the coast between Newcastle and Sydney.

If developed, it would be the only offshore gas field on Australia’s east coast.
