DRIVER CHARGED OVER STOLEN VEHICLE CRASH

Police have charged a man after he allegedly left the scene of a high-speed crash near Tweed Heads.

About 3am yesterday, a set of keys to a blue Mercedes AMG wagon were allegedly stolen from a house in Kingscliff while the owners were asleep.

About an hour later, the stolen vehicle was involved in a crash with a Toyota Corolla on the M1 Motorway near Tugun.

A 21-year-old man suffered head and whiplash injuries.

It is alleged that the driver and two passengers in the Mercedes wagon ran away, without helping the driver of the Corolla.

Police attended and started an investigation into the crash.

At 2pm yesterday, officers arrested an 18-year-old man at a Tweed Heads South house.

He has since been charged with 16 traffic and property related offences, and an outstanding warrant.

The man was refused bail, and faced Tweed Heads Local Court yesterday.

As investigations continue, police are asking anyone who has dashcam footage of the area to contact them.
