TRAIL BIKE RIDER HITS HUNTER POLICE OFFICER DURING PURSUIT

A police officer is recovering from several serious injuries after being hit by a trail bike rider in the Hunter overnight.

An unregistered trail bike was riding along the New England Highway at Maitland when police initiated a pursuit around 7pm.

A senior constable then jumped out of the police car and was on foot near High Street, when the bike rammed into him.

The rider fell off, but the bike kept going, colliding into a Mitsubishi Pajero on the New England Highway.

The 36-year-old officer suffered nasty leg fractures, and suspected head, pelvic and spinal injuries.

He was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital where he remains for treatment for a fractured wrist, a cut to his arm and a possible broken nose.

The 19-year-old trail bike rider was also taken to hospital for head, leg and pelvis injuries.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are continuing.

Police will address the media at midday.
